There has been a sudden explosion of map sites due to the efforts of Google maps and Yahoo maps. Many of these sites encourage you to add points of interest, while others allow you to upload GPS data to create sharable maps. Unfortunately, many of these sites quickly become a mess where the valuable information is lost inside lots of random noise. As nice as it is to see where random people went biking or running yesterday, you really need more information to know if you want to explore there today.
99trails.com is starting from a different point of view. We target a specific area, create a critical mass of maps, and then build a community around that area. Once an area is seeded, we hope to open it up for the community to foster its growth. This leads to high coverage and quality maps.
Our first targeted area is Philadelphia. Click on the image to the right to see what we have.
Our maps are superior to other sites because of our process. We personally visit the trails and map them with a GPS unit. Due to possible errors in the data from overcast weather or topographic changes, we scrub that data by hand and redraw the maps using various technologies. We then take the extra time to add markers for important places such as where to park, where to eat, and other valuable information. Finally, the profile and quick description get you started on understanding the trail without being there. All of this in one place keeps you from having to find and search each township, county, state, and federal recreational website just to discover the public trails in your area.
This site has received a lot of positive feedback. Unfortunately, the resources supporting it are far less than larger companies or other ventures on the market. 3 years ago, this was an innovative approach; but in that time, many groups have started to tackle trail mapping from the same quality standpoint as 99trails.com.
At this time this site is left up for those who still find value in it; but without additional suport it will not be updated or grown further. If you would like to see it continue to grow and have the resources to support it, contact us because with those resources, we have great ideas to pursue!
We're not alone in this venture, 99trails is aware of similar Google Map recreation efforts in other places.
Update: It's official, Google will eventually provide a solution with google maps.
